Getting Rid of "that" smell by Nick Bickel
I am sure most of the Glenview home owners know by now that we have skunks
in our area.
Leah and I have recently
experienced our dog getting sprayed on two separate
occasions in our back yard. I have heard several others in the area have
shared our fate. Naturally it usually happens late at night when some of the
stores or other sources of help and support may be closed. This only adds to the
emotion of the moment as you scramble to find out what to do or whom to ask
for help.
Over the years I have heard of many home remedies in dealing with
this problem but some of them (Like tomato juice or peanut butter) seem
very messy to use. Depending on who you talk to most of these remedies may
not work very well either..........
About a year ago I heard of a simple baking
soda and hydrogen-peroxide
solution that can be mixed up in the home. The reports were it worked as
good as or better than most of the other remedies that were available. When
personally faced with this situation ( late at night of course), I was left
trying to remember what to mix and how to mix it.
As I was unable to recall the exact details of the mixture, we called the Emergency Animal
Hospital, in Corinth, and found they recommended the same baking soda and
peroxide remedy.
They were able to give us the recipe for mixture and use.
Having used this home remedy twice, I can say it works very well and is easy
to both mix and use.
We have a Great Dane that weighs more than 160 Lbs. and
the amounts given below are adequate for our needs. I see no reason why
smaller amounts couldn't be mixed up for smaller pets.
When a couple of our neighbors heard about our skunk experience and our
success in dealing with it, they suggested posting an article on the website
so everyone can have easy access to the information.
Skunk Spray Deodorizer Mix:
There are only three ingredients in the remedy which are to be mixed as
follows:
Don't try to save what's left for next time.
Deodorizing the Pet:
When the above paste solution has been mixed, continue as follows with the
cleaning process:
CAUTION: Usually your
pet will be sprayed in the face area. Take extra care
to avoid getting the paste mixture in your pet's eyes.
Note: It may be a good idea to wear rubber gloves and wear an
apron to
protect your hands and clothing from getting the skunk spray on you while
you are washing your pet. However, if you do get some of the spray on you;
the paste mixture will work on you too.......
the pet's fur to act as a wetting agent.
taking extra care to not get the mixture in the pet's eyes.
the pet off with clean water.
it away from the area in the yard where the pet was sprayed by the skunk.
When finished; the odor should be completely gone. I didn't even notice the
smell of wet dog before drying the dog with a towel. (But maybe that was
because my nose quit working due to the strong skunk odor.)
As an extra precaution, I used a little men's cologne just in case there were any small
area's that got missed in the bathing process. The next day I thought
Boureguard's fur was softer and fluffier than normal. I have
used this
remedy twice and seen no negative side effects.
